Beginning Aerial Hammock (5-17 years)
Participants (ages 5 to 17) will learn spins, hangs, climbs, and other aerial fitness techniques from certified VaihAyasa-based teachers, helping them to defy gravity. Students will learn a blend of yoga, fitness, and circus-style moves, holds, climbs, wraps, progressions, and sequences during each class, building strength, endurance, and increasing flexibility. The class is ideal for beginners and those who own a hammock but don't know how to use it safely. Aerial hammock benefits students at all levels of fitness, experience, and abilities and is ideal for building core and upper body strength, balance, flexibility, and body awareness.
Tumble Bugs (Ages 14 mo-3 years)
Your toddler will be jumping, balancing, swinging, and doing so much more in this parent-child class as they learn about the world of gymnastics via self-directed discovery. An instructor is available to guide you and your child on safely utilizing bars, beams, and skill mats. For those who are ready, the instructor will work more hands-on with your child, introducing them to entry-level tumbling skills.
Youth Tumbling (Ages 3.5-11 yrs beginning/8-14 yrs intermediate)
This recreation youth program (3.5-14 yrs) emphasizes tumbling skills (rolls, cartwheels, walkovers, handsprings, etc.) but also incorporates balance, low beam, uneven bar, and vaulting skills. The intermediate teen/preteen tumbling program (8-14 yrs) focuses on fine-tuning fundamental tumbling skills and will teach next-level skills such as handsprings, aerials, etc. Classes are taught in a fun and positive manner and assist with improving self-confidence, agility, balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, as well as gross motor skills.
Pre-Ballet, Tap & Creative Movement (2.5-4 years)
Your tiny dancer will be introduced to the world of creative movement, dance, and tumbling through creative expression and dramatic play. Preschoolers will be introduced to basic dance terminology, ballet positions, tap steps, and tumbling skills through the use of engaging props such as scarves, hoops, ribbons, and fans, upbeat music as well as follow-me and pretend-play songs. This class assists with coordination, motor skill development, listening skills, peer interaction, and musicality. Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to perform in a year-end dance recital.
Ballet, Tap & Tumble (3.5-5 yrs/5-8 yrs)
This program is ideal for students who are ready for more structured dance and tumbling technique instruction but still want to have a class full of imagination and fun. During the dance (ballet and tap) portions, students will learn barre, center, and across the floor combinations, progressions, and choreography. With a newly dedicated tumbling room at the Lake Gregory Education Community Center, students will learn a greater variety of tumbling skills in addition to bar and beam. Our classes encourage proper technique, musicality, agility, coordination, and balance while developing performance skills. Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to perform in a year-end dance recital.
Ballet Jazz/Acro Dance (5-8 years)
This beginning-level program blends the artistic expression of dance with the athleticism of acrobatics. The class starts with a warm-up, followed by ballet and jazz barre exercises, center work, and across-the-floor combinations that includes turns, leaps, and jumps. The acrobatic component of the class follows a curriculum that emphasizes safe and effective progressions in the five divisions of acro dance (flexibility, strength, balancing, limbering, and tumbling) through both individual and partner techniques that include balances, lifts, holds, and movement skills (headstands, handstands, bridges, splits, cartwheels, rolls, and walkovers, etc.). Each class ends with high-energy dance choreography that seamlessly integrates dance and acrobatic elements. Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to perform in a year-end dance recital.
Ballet & Jazz/Hip-Hop (7-11 years)
This 1-hour class allows the dancers to develop skills in three of the most popular dance styles—ballet, jazz and hip-hop. The first half of the class focuses on proper ballet and jazz technique beginning with warm-up and barre exercises progressing to center skills and across-the-floor combinations. The second half of the class turns up the beat and incorporates dance technique into fun and high-energy, age-appropriate jazz/hip-hop dance combinations or routines. The program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded dance education, encompassing both technical foundations and creative exploration in multiple dance genres. Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to perform in a year-end dance recital.
Lyrical Ballet/Broadway Jazz (10+ years)
Lyrical dance combines technical aspects of classical ballet with the emotion and freedom of modern dance and contemporary jazz. This 1-hour class begins by reinforcing ballet fundamentals and introducing new skills in both center and across the floor instruction. Combinations and choreography are developed to encourage creative expression using ballet-based techniques. The second half of the class focuses on more Broadway-style jazz techniques, movements and expressions. High energy and fun routines are choreographed to popular show tunes such as Wicked, Hamilton, Arabian Nights, Mamma Mia and Hairspray. Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to perform in a year-end dance recital.
DanceSport: Competitive Dance (10+ years)
Have performance experience, a passion for dance and ready to take your skills to the next level? Now through October 1st intermediate level dancers (ages 10+) with current and/or previous multi-genre dance and gymnastics training are encouraged to try out to join AFK’s award-winning competitive dance team. The team will compete in both small and large group divisions in multiple regional dance competitions between February and June 2025. Additional performance opportunities, field trips, and master classes may be scheduled throughout the season.
